China becomes the second country in history to plant its flag on the surface of the moon after more than 50 years from the United States.
The images were taken with the camera of the spacecraft Chang’e-5 before returning on Thursday with samples of moonstones.
During the Apollo 11 mission in 1969, the United States hosted the flag of a country on the moon for the first time.
Until 1972, five more US flags were hoisted on the moon during various missions.
Citing satellite imagery, NASA said in 2012 that the five flags were still there, but experts thought they could turn white in the sun’s intense rays.
The state-run Global Times reported that the Chinese flag was reminiscent of the “excitement and inspiration” felt during the NASA Apollo mission.
The Chinese flag is two meters wide and 90 centimeters long, Li Yunfeng, who led the project, told the Global Times.
The spacecraft Chang’e-5 took soil and rock samples from the moon’s surface.
The Chinese flag is seen on the surface of the moon for the first time in a picture taken from the Chang’e-3 spacecraft that went to China’s first lunar mission.
In 2019, the Chang’e-4 spacecraft was able to carry the Chinese flag on the dark surface of the moon.
However, neither of those two times was literally a cloth flag, but a Chinese flag painted on the surface of the spacecraft.
The Chang’e-5 mission is China’s third successful lunar mission in seven years.
