Myanmar’s newly-elected Aung San Suu Kyi ruling party the National League for Democracy (NLD) MP Htike Zaw has shot dead.
He has shot dead in the evening in front of his home in Shan State on Saturday.
The National League for Democracy (NLD) on Sunday condemned the post-election killings as political violence and called for an immediate investigation.
Suu Kyi ruling party spokesman Mio Nyunt spokesman said newly elected MP Htike Zaw used to run a shop in front of his house and shot dead in Chakme town.
“He (Htike Zaw) went out of the shop when a customer came,” Nyunt told Reuters by phone. That customer shot him. ”
The bullet hit the right side of his chest. He died on the way to Chakma District Hospital, the Myanmar Times reported.
Myanmar held general elections on November 8. 50-years old Htike Zaw won one seat. Leader Aung San Suu Kyi’s party, the National League for Democracy (LND) also won a landslide victory.
Shortly afterward, NLD spokesperson Nayunt described the killing of the newly elected MP as “bad for the future“. Police have not commented on the killings.
This is the second general election in Myanmar. The latest results confirm a majority after the NLD claimed victory in the preliminary results of the election.
However, Myanmar’s military-backed opposition Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) has demanded re-election alleging irregularities in the vote.
Meanwhile, the National League for Democracy (NLD) has demanded evidence of irregularities in the vote.
The seat won by Htike Zaw was earlier held by the ethnic Shan Party and there was controversy over the seat, NLD spokesperson Nyunt said. However, he did not elaborate.
Earlier this month, the house of an Election Commission official in Chakme was attacked.
