Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC)launched a deadly missile attack on two US airbases in Iraq on Wednesday morning. Tehran claims 80 US troops have been killed and 200 others injured in the attack.
According to Iranian military sources, local media said on Wednesday that an Iran’s missile attack on a US airbase in Ain Al-Assad, in western Iraq, killed 80 US troops. Another, 200 troops were injured in the incident. The source also said that the US missile defense system wasn’t coping with an Iranian-launched missile. Each missile hit US airbases. This attack has caused extensive damage to military equipment, including militants, drones, and helicopters stationed at US airbases. Tehran has claimed 22 missiles were successfully hit in two US bases altogether. They named this mission ‘ Operation martyr Soleimani’.
Iran’s top religious leader Ayatollah Khamenei said they had “slapped the American face” by attacking US airbases in Iraq.
Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif said on Twitter that the killing of General Soleimani was retaliated according to the UN Charter. He added on twitters General Soleimani was killed by flying a drone from this Al-Assad base. He also said that according to the UN Charter, Iran has every right to self-defense. However, Iran has no intention of engaging in war.
Washington is monitoring the incident, White House spokesman Stephanie Grisham said, adding that rocket attack was carried out on a US airbase in Iraq. We are aware of this and are watching closely. President Donald Trump has been notified of the incident. He is in talks with senior officials of the US National Security Team and the Defense Department.
After the attack, Trump said on Twitter, “All is well.”
Meanwhile, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard made a statement to the IRNA news agency after the attack.
The statement said the attack was a revenge for the killing of Quds General Soleimani. We want to warn that terrorist states will be targeted only to those who have used their bases. Attacks will be launched from anywhere in the world where aggressive action against Iran is carried out.
It is worth mentioning that on Tuesday, the Iranian parliament passed a bill declaring all US forces as terrorist organizations.
This bill said, All the US forces involved in the killing of Qasem Soleimani have been described as ‘terrorists’. Also, all the Pentagon officials and all the agencies, agents and commanders associated with the Foreign Office who ordered the killing of Soleimani are termed ‘terrorists’. The bill also says, “Military, intelligence, economic, technical assistance, as well as other services or logistics assistance that the US forces provide will also be considered terrorist accomplice.
Parliamentarians voted to grants 200 million euros to the foreign branch Quds Force, of Iran’s revolutionary guard force.
The Pentagon said the missile strikes at the Erbil and Al-Asad airbase The missiles have been fired from Iran. 17 missiles have been fired in Al-Assad airbase.
Al-Assad’s airbase is so big that there are movie halls, swimming pools, fast food restaurants, and two indoor bus routes. In 1980, The base was built in the desert one hundred miles west of Baghdad for the Iraqi army. But, after the US invasion year of 2003, it became the largest US airbase there. The base is so nice and well-equipped that some US troops call it ‘Camp Cupcake’.
Contextually, Qasem Soleimani took over as the head of the Quds Force in the year of 1998. After he took office, the US influence in Syria, Lebanon and Iraq diminishes and Iran’s authority increase.
Tehran has been in talks with Saudi Arabia for several days in a bid to bring peace to the Middle East. In the mediation of Baghdad, General Qasem Soleimani was acting as ambassador to Iran’s side in the talks. He was killed in a US attack Baghdad International Airport on January 3 last. Since then, the two countries has been created a war situation.
